Actor Dhanush recently shared a heartfelt moment during the promotions of his latest film Tere Ishq Mein. While visiting Varanasi, he became emotional as the locals continued to call him “Kundan”, the iconic character he played in his Bollywood debut Raanjhanaa (2013).
For any actor, a character becomes truly iconic when it remains etched in the audience’s memory long after the film’s release. And for Dhanush, the fact that even after ten years the people of Varanasi still lovingly address him by his character’s name is a testament to the deep impact Raanjhanaa created.
During the promotions, Dhanush opened up about his bond with the city and how spiritually transformative Varanasi also known as Banaras has been for him. He described it not just as a city, but as a place of inner awakening.
“Varanasi is not just a city to me… it’s a spiritual awakening. I have connected with every street, every ghat, every temple here. Because of Mahadev, I felt a shift within myself. I offered myself to Mahadev,” Dhanush said emotionally.
The actor also shared serene moments from his recent Varanasi trip on social media — sitting peacefully by the Ganga, watching the sunset, absorbing the divine atmosphere. These photos quickly went viral, showcasing his deep spiritual connection with the holy city.
This visit comes at a meaningful time, as Tere Ishq Mein releases exactly a decade after Raanjhanaa, and is directed by the same filmmaker, Anand L. Rai. The film features Kriti Sanon as Mukti, a young woman who falls in love with Shankar, played by Dhanush. The story portrays Shankar as a strong, unpredictable rebel whose life takes unexpected turns when love separates the couple. What vow he makes against Delhi and how his journey unfolds is something audiences will witness on the big screen.
Produced under the banners of T-Series and Colour Yellow Productions by Anand L. Rai, Himanshu Sharma, Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar, Tere Ishq Mein released in theatres today (November 28). The film features music by A.R. Rahman, adding emotional depth and grandeur to the story.
With Varanasi continuing to embrace him as “Kundan,” Dhanush’s connection with the city seems stronger than ever both spiritually and artistically.
