A devastating fire accident in South Delhi claimed at least 21 lives and left more than 40 people injured on Wednesday morning. The massive blaze broke out around 9 AM at Flourish Stay B&B, a lodging facility located in Malviya Nagar, triggering a large-scale rescue operation.

According to preliminary reports, many of the victims were foreign nationals from Central Asian and African countries. Authorities fear the death toll could rise further as rescue and search operations continue.

The establishment was reportedly licensed under the Delhi government’s Bed and Breakfast (B&B) scheme and had permission to operate only six rooms. However, initial investigations suggest that the management may have violated regulations by accommodating guests in as many as 25 rooms, including spaces in the basement, far exceeding the approved capacity.

Firefighters rushed to the scene soon after the incident was reported. While the flames spread rapidly across the building, emergency teams managed to rescue over 40 people trapped inside, preventing an even greater tragedy.

Officials are yet to determine the exact cause of the fire. A detailed investigation has been launched to ascertain whether safety violations or negligence contributed to the disaster.

Expressing grief over the loss of lives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. He announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh to the families of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 to those injured in the incident.

The tragic blaze has once again raised serious concerns over fire safety compliance and regulatory enforcement in commercial establishments operating under residential accommodation schemes.
