Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been living in India for the past year and a half. The Government of India granted her asylum after she abruptly fled to New Delhi in the wake of the violent uprising that broke out in Bangladesh last year. She landed with just a few belongings, and since then, the Modi government has provided her with security, respect, and a residence. Recently, Hasina publicly expressed her gratitude, saying India had treated her with great warmth.
Sentenced to Death
In a shocking development, the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh has handed down a death sentence to Sheikh Hasina. The verdict states that she was responsible for the riots, violence, and unrest that occurred in the country last year. The court further accused former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun of committing brutal acts during the same period. These incidents were classified as crimes against humanity.
Severe Allegations
According to the court, Hasina and other top officials engaged in inhumane actions while in power. They allegedly instigated killings and violence across the country. Following the verdict, public opinion in Bangladesh has been sharply divided some welcomed the judgment, while many others broke down in tears outside the court premises.
Bangladesh Demands Her Extradition
Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, welcomed the court’s decision and stated that the law is equal for everyone no matter how powerful. He urged the Indian government to extradite Sheikh Hasina and the other accused officials under the existing extradition treaty between the two countries. The news was reported by the Reuters news agency.
India’s Cautious Response
This is not the first time Bangladesh has requested Hasina’s extradition. India did not respond to earlier demands, and it remains unclear how New Delhi will react now. Responding cautiously, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said it had taken note of the tribunal’s verdict. India emphasized that Bangladesh is an important neighbour and reiterated its commitment to peace, democracy, and stability in the country. The ministry added that India would continue engaging constructively with all stakeholders in Bangladesh.
This measured response has sparked debate: Is India leaning toward Sheikh Hasina, or is it aligning with the current Bangladesh administration?
Hasina Calls the Verdict Political
Sheikh Hasina strongly condemned the verdict, calling it politically motivated. She claimed it was delivered under pressure from a “puppet government” currently operating in Bangladesh. She said she was not given a fair chance to present her case and alleged that the trial lacked neutrality. Hasina also declared that she has nothing to fear.
For now, the biggest question remains: Will India extradite Sheikh Hasina or protect her? The answer continues to hang in suspense.
