The controversy surrounding Kerala Story 2 has escalated, with the Kerala High Court issuing an interim stay on the film’s release. The movie, which was scheduled to hit theatres on February 27, will now remain on hold until further orders from the court.
The decision came from a bench headed by Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, who expressed serious reservations about the certification granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Several petitions were filed seeking a suspension of the film’s release and cancellation of its censor certificate, alleging that the content could disrupt communal harmony and project a distorted portrayal of Kerala.
During the proceedings, the court observed that Kerala has long been known for its secular values and peaceful coexistence among communities. It questioned whether these sensitivities were adequately taken into account while granting certification to the film.
The bench also noted that since the film claims to be inspired by real events, the risk of misrepresentation and potential social tension cannot be overlooked. Additionally, concerns were raised over the use of “Kerala” in the title, with the court pointing out that it might create sweeping generalisations about the state.
Petitioners further argued that certain promotional materials could incite unrest. They suggested measures such as adding stronger disclaimers or even modifying the film’s title to prevent misunderstanding.
The matter is expected to come up for hearing again soon, as the court attempts to balance the principles of creative freedom with the larger public interest.
