Controversy erupts in TFI: How not to ask an actress about casting couch…

Ananya Nagalla looked upset on the stage at an event related to ‘Pottel’, on Friday. A journalist happened to ask her about the casting couch in the industry in a tone that was not befitting.

The actress was taken aback by the framing of the question. It was as if the journalist had arrived at the conclusion that Ananya had faced the casting couch without a doubt. “My friend told me actresses are paid different amounts as remuneration depending on whether they give ‘commitment’ (sexual favours). Everything is mentioned in the agreement they sign,” the journalist said.

At this, Ananya had enough. She used the ‘BS’ word, looking visibly upset. The journalist was lucky that Ananya didn’t ridicule and deride the myth she was holding: that a sexual favour clause is mentioned in agreement documents. No producer in his senses would do such a thing and end up in jail.

Casting couch-related questions must be sensitive to the sentiments of the actress being asked. They are best asked in one-to-one interviews, not in press meets where ten others are asking an entire movie team different questions.
