Ahmed al-Ahmed, the Bondi Beach hero, has been awarded A$2.5 million (around Rs 14 crore) in community donations while recovering in hospital from gunshot injuries sustained during the attack. The 43-year-old police officer was widely praised for his bravery in disarming one of the attackers during the tragic incident at Bondi Beach, Sydney, on Sunday.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese lauded al-Ahmed’s actions as an example of “Australians coming together” in the face of violence. Armed with only his service handgun, Ahmed shot one of the attackers, preventing further loss of life.
The attack occurred during a Jewish Hanukkah celebration when two men opened fire, killing 15 people and injuring nearly 42 others. Demonstrating remarkable courage, Ahmed confronted the gunman, shielding the crowd and putting himself directly in harm’s way. He was shot multiple times, sustaining serious injuries to his arm, and faces the possibility of losing it.
Authorities have identified the attackers as Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed, 24, who reportedly have links to Hyderabad, Telangana. The duo had told family members they were going on a weekend fishing trip before carrying out the antisemitic assault.
Ahmed al-Ahmed’s heroic actions have been hailed nationwide, with many calling him a symbol of courage and selflessness in the face of extreme danger
