On Tuesday (August 27th), the Supreme Court granted bail to BRS leader Kalvakuntla Kavitha in the corruption cases related to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy. These cases were initiated by the ED and the CBI.
Court’s Rationale for Bail
The court noted that the investigation into the matter is complete and a chargesheet has been filed. “The court also stated that Kavitha’s continued custody is unnecessary, given that she has already been behind bars for five months. Furthermore, the court acknowledged that the likelihood of concluding the trial in the near future is improbable,” a report by Bar & Bench said.
What will be the media’s narrative now?
A section of the Telugu political media, among them a channel run by a noted journalist, has been claiming that the BRS is going to be merged with the BJP. With Kavitha securing a bail amidst this speculation, how the narrative will shift is left to be seen. “BRS supremo KCR stood strong. Never even visited Kavitha in prison, and clearly never bowed down or cut a deal. The brother (KTR) stood strong too, never minced words while attacking the BJP throughout the whole episode,” wrote senior journalist Revathi.
