Bangladesh’s ‘Dark Prince’ Set to Become Prime Minister After BNP’s Landslide Victory

In a dramatic political turnaround, Bangladesh has delivered a decisive mandate in its first general elections since the abrupt exit of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The 13th general elections mark a significant shift in the country’s political landscape following months of unrest and uncertainty.

Sheikh Hasina fled the country in August 2024 amid a massive student-led uprising, bringing an end to her 15-year tenure in power. Since then, Bangladesh has been navigating a turbulent transition period under an interim administration.

According to preliminary reports, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has crossed the crucial 200-seat mark in the 300-member Parliament, securing a landslide victory without the need for coalition support. The party’s main rival, Jamaat-e-Islami, is reportedly confined to double-digit seats, while Hasina’s Awami League was barred from contesting the polls.

The BNP is led by Tarique Rahman, often dubbed the “Dark Prince” in political circles. After spending 17 years in self-imposed exile in London, Rahman returned to Bangladesh in December last year. With the party’s sweeping mandate, he is now set to be sworn in as the country’s next Prime Minister, ending a two-decade wait for the BNP’s return to power.

Despite the emphatic victory, Tarique Rahman has urged party supporters to refrain from celebratory rallies. In a mark of respect for his mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who passed away before the elections, the BNP has instead called on supporters to offer prayers following Friday congregational prayers.

The election is widely seen as a referendum on the much-discussed “July National Charter,” introduced during the interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. The charter outlines sweeping constitutional and political reforms, including limiting prime ministers to two terms (10 years), establishing an upper house of Parliament, and reinstating the caretaker government system to oversee future elections.

The BNP’s resounding victory signals a dramatic shift in Bangladesh’s political trajectory and ushers in a new chapter for a nation that has witnessed significant upheaval over the past year. As the country prepares for a new government under Tarique Rahman, expectations are high for political stability, institutional reforms, and a reset in governance.
