Baahubali 2’s Mass Appeal vs Kalki’s High Ticket Rates: A Box Office Showdown

The number of people who watched ‘Baahubali 2’ in Indian theatres (both single screens and multiplexes) is double that of those who watched ‘Kalki 2898 AD’, as per a report. In terms of collections (Indian market), the difference was probably about 30% or so. ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ benefited from increased ticket rates and that’s why its BO collections were not proportionally lower than that of ‘Baahubali 2’.

Producer S Naga Vamsi’s attention was drawn to this statistic in a recent interview. Had the ticket rates been affordable, wouldn’t ‘Kalki’ have attracted the same footfalls as ‘Baahubali 2’?

As per the producer, the two films are not comparable. “As far as ‘Baahubali 2′ was concerned, it was as much Prabhas’ film as it was Rajamouli’s. It was like a two-hero movie and also a sequel. Its footfalls can’t be compared with that of ‘Kalki’,” the producer of the upcoming ‘Lucky Baskhar’ says.

S Naga Vamsi is one of the biggest producers in the industry to defend high ticket rates. Recently, he provocatively stated that a family of four gets to be entertained for 3 hours by spending just Rs 1,500 on movie tickets. “It’s the cheapest source of entertainment any family can have,” he added.
