Every year during November and December, millions of South Indian devotees observe the sacred Ayyappa Deeksha. This 41-day spiritual practice traditionally concludes with offering the revered Irumudi at the Sabarimala Temple an age-old ritual deeply rooted in devotion and discipline.
For years, pilgrims have expressed concerns regarding airline restrictions that prevented them from carrying the Irumudi in the cabin. Devotees repeatedly appealed to authorities, requesting permission to keep the sacred bundle with them during air travel instead of placing it in the cargo hold.
Responding swiftly to these concerns, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has announced a landmark decision. “I am pleased to announce an important step taken for the convenience and spiritual comfort of Ayyappa devotees undertaking the holy pilgrimage to Sabarimala,” he stated.
Acknowledging the emotional and religious significance of the Irumudi, the Ministry of Civil Aviation will now allow devotees to carry it inside the aircraft cabin. The ministry confirmed that all essential security protocols will still be strictly followed, ensuring a balance between safety and spiritual sensitivity.
This decision underscores the government’s commitment to preserving cultural traditions, respecting religious practices, and supporting the devotional sentiments of millions. Unsurprisingly, the announcement has been warmly welcomed and widely appreciated by the Hindu community across the country.
