Despite massive expectations surrounding the franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in James Cameron’s epic Avatar series, has failed to register the biggest opening of 2025. Trade analysts and audiences alike were surprised as the much-hyped film could not outperform this year’s top opener animated blockbuster Zootopia 2.
Avatar: Fire and Ash opened to a global first-day collection of $137 million, a respectable figure but insufficient to claim the top spot. In a surprising twist, the film fell short of Zootopia 2, which stormed the box office with a staggering $150 million opening day upon its release on November 26.
The primary reason behind Avatar 3’s underwhelming debut was its moderate performance in North America, where it earned just $36 million on day one, including previews. This softer domestic response significantly impacted the film’s overall opening figures. Although the film showed strength overseas with nearly $100 million from international markets, it still couldn’t surpass the animated juggernaut.
What has further disappointed trade circles is that Fire and Ash failed to collect even half of the opening-day numbers achieved by Avatar: The Way of Water, which debuted in 2022 with a phenomenal $441 million global opening. Given that the first two Avatar films went on to gross over $2 billion each worldwide, expectations were understandably high for the third chapter.
Going forward, the film’s box office fate will heavily depend on strong word of mouth, sustained weekday collections, and a solid run during the Christmas holiday season. Achieving the $1.5 billion global milestone now stands as a significant challenge and a key benchmark for Avatar: Fire and Ash.
