Star director AR Murugadoss has grabbed attention with bold comments about his upcoming Tamil film Madharaasi. He revealed that the movie will run for 2 hours and 45 minutes, a duration that surprised many. While lengthy runtimes usually worry audiences, Murugadoss justified his decision by pointing to new viewing habits.
“People now binge-watch entire web series in one go. If the content stays gripping, time doesn’t matter. I have designed Madharaasi in a way that keeps viewers hooked, so this runtime will feel perfect,” he told Galatta Plus.
Murugadoss also faces backlash from Salman Khan fans after blaming the Bollywood star for the poor performance of Sikandar. Critics accuse him of making excuses to hide his mistakes. The director now understands that he must deliver a big hit with Madharaasi to prove his strength once again.
Sivakarthikeyan Steals the Spotlight in Madharaasi
Sivakarthikeyan leads the film as Ragu, a character Murugadoss describes as very different from a regular person. He promised audiences something refreshing and exciting. “This film works as a fun entertainer, but it also carries a warning for people,” he explained, suggesting that the story will mix entertainment with a message.
The movie features Rukmini Vasanth as the female lead and Vidyut Jammwal as the villain. Murugadoss filled the film with action and drama, and the team plans to release it worldwide on September 5.
Why Shah Rukh Khan Almost Played the Lead
Murugadoss also surprised fans by revealing that he once offered the lead character of Madharaasi to Shah Rukh Khan. He pitched the idea nearly eight years ago, long before completing the script. “At that time, I only had the character in mind, not the full story. SRK liked the idea and agreed to do it. But delays dragged on, and the project never moved forward,” Murugadoss recalled.
Cinematographer Ravi K. Chandran arranged the meeting with SRK, and the superstar responded warmly. However, the long gap and lack of follow-up killed the plan. Murugadoss admitted that after directing Ghajini with Aamir Khan in 2008, he lost motivation to work in Hindi films, which also pushed him away from developing the project with Shah Rukh.
Countdown Begins for Madharaasi
With critics attacking him over Sikandar and fans questioning his Salman Khan remarks, Murugadoss knows the pressure sits heavy on him. Still, he remains confident about Madharaasi. By backing a long yet gripping runtime and offering Sivakarthikeyan in a never-before-seen role, Murugadoss places huge bets on this project. The real test of his bold stand on lengthy films will arrive on September 5 when audiences finally watch it.
