The Andhra Pradesh High Court clarified its stance on the controversy surrounding Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan continuing his film career while holding a constitutional post. The court stated clearly that no law restricts a Chief Minister or minister from acting in movies. However, the petition against Pawan Kalyan will continue, and the court fixed the next hearing for September 15.
Fresh Update from the High Court
Justice Venkata Jyothirmayi heard the matter on Monday and made it clear that the court would not direct the government to file a counter reply at this stage. The judge adjourned the proceedings and allowed the petitioner’s counsel to present reply arguments in the next session.
What the Petition Says
Former IAS officer Vijay Kumar filed the case and demanded an independent probe against Pawan Kalyan. He alleged that Pawan misused government funds and machinery to promote his upcoming film Hari Hara Veera Mallu. Kumar also argued that Pawan acted in movies while serving as Deputy Chief Minister, which he described as unconstitutional and unethical.
Advocate Bala, who represented the petitioner, expanded the allegations. He claimed that Pawan Kalyan abused his position to influence cinema ticket pricing and commercial promotions. Bala urged the court to summon all government records connected to the recent ticket price hike in Andhra Pradesh.
AG’s Strong Counter-Arguments
Advocate General Dammalapati Srinivas, representing the state, rejected the allegations as baseless. He argued that no law prevents Chief Ministers or ministers from acting in films. He supported his point by citing the example of former Chief Minister N. T. Rama Rao, explaining that a full bench of the High Court had already ruled on the matter decades ago.
Srinivas clarified that the petition did not challenge the government’s memo on ticket price revision and did not prove Pawan Kalyan’s role in the decision. He criticized such petitions as a waste of judicial time and urged the court to dismiss the case with costs.
What Lies Ahead
The High Court has not ruled on whether Pawan Kalyan misused his office. For now, the court only emphasized that ministers can legally act in movies. The court will hear the case again on September 15, when the petitioner’s counsel will present reply arguments.
This case has drawn wide attention as Pawan continues to balance his dual role as Deputy CM and an active film actor, a rare combination in Indian politics.
