Animated Feature Registers Unprecedented ₹900 Crore Opening Day Collection

Produced on a budget of around $150 million, Zootopia 2 now stands as the most expensive animated film ever made, and it is living up to the scale with record-breaking returns. The film has registered the biggest opening weekend in China for any Hollywood movie, surpassing major live-action blockbusters.

Within just four days, the film has grossed over $200 million in China alone, placing it among the fastest-performing Hollywood releases in that market. This unprecedented response has taken trade circles by surprise, as animated films usually cater to a comparatively smaller audience base and historically, Chinese moviegoers haven’t been especially drawn to foreign animated content.

Yet, Zootopia 2 is rewriting the rules. Its explosive run suggests a significant shift in audience preferences, potentially opening the gates for more animated features to succeed in China and encouraging global studios to invest more in the genre.

The film follows detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as they pursue a mysterious reptilian criminal turning the city of Zootopia on its head. Their investigation leads them undercover into unexplored parts of the metropolis, testing their partnership in new and unexpected ways.
