The countdown to Andhra Pradesh local body elections has begun, with discussions over seat sharing among the ruling NDA alliance partners gaining momentum. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Jana Sena Party (JSP), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are reportedly engaged in negotiations to finalise their respective shares ahead of the elections. With thousands of local body positions at stake, Jana Sena’s reported demand for a 30% share and the BJP’s expectations of a 10–15% allocation have become key talking points in Andhra Pradesh politics.
Jana Sena Eyes 30% Seats, Six Mayor Posts
According to political discussions, Jana Sena is seeking around 30% of the seats in the upcoming local body elections. The party is reportedly aiming for six mayoral positions out of the 17 mayor posts in the state. It is also said to be demanding 26 municipal chairperson posts out of the 106 available positions.
Apart from these key posts, Jana Sena reportedly wants a fair share of ZPTC, MPTC, Mandal Parishad president and other local body positions. The party is believed to be looking at these elections as an opportunity to strengthen its grassroots presence and expand its political influence across Andhra Pradesh.
Chandrababu, Pawan Kalyan Hold Seat-Sharing Discussions
Seat-sharing negotiations have reportedly intensified among the alliance partners. During a meeting with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, Jana Sena was represented by senior leader and minister Nadendla Manohar.
AP TDP president Palla Srinivasa Rao and minister Nimmala Ramanaidu reportedly met Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan to discuss the seat-sharing formula. Reports suggest that Pawan Kalyan indicated that further discussions should involve Nadendla Manohar and MP Lingamaneni Ramesh.
The negotiations are expected to focus on balancing the electoral strength, organisational presence and political expectations of all three alliance partners.
BJP Also Seeks a Bigger Share in Local Elections
Jana Sena is not the only alliance partner seeking a substantial share. The BJP is also reportedly seeking around 10–15% of the seats and is keen to secure important positions, including mayoral and Zilla Parishad posts.
The party is said to be looking to expand its grassroots presence by securing representation in municipal bodies, Mandal Parishads, MPTCs and ZPTCs. BJP Andhra Pradesh president Madhav is reportedly planning further discussions with Chandrababu Naidu to negotiate the party’s share in the elections.
With both Jana Sena and the BJP seeking a greater role in local governance, the TDP leadership faces the challenge of arriving at a mutually acceptable formula without creating friction within the alliance.
Thousands of Local Body Positions at Stake
Andhra Pradesh has a significant number of local body positions to be filled, making the seat-sharing exercise crucial for all three parties. The positions mentioned in the current political discussions include 17 mayoral posts, 28 Zilla Parishad chairperson posts, around 106 municipal chairperson posts, approximately 661 Mandal Parishad president posts, 661 ZPTC positions, 9,913 MPTC positions, 3,884 urban wards and 13,351 sarpanch positions.
The distribution of these positions will play a major role in determining the political influence of each alliance partner at the grassroots level.
Can the NDA Alliance Finalise Its Seat-Sharing Formula?
The local body elections are expected to test the coordination among the three NDA partners in Andhra Pradesh. While Jana Sena wants a share that reflects its political ambitions, the BJP is also looking to strengthen its presence beyond the state’s major political centres. TDP, meanwhile, will have to balance these demands while protecting its own electoral interests.
If the alliance partners reach an agreement through negotiations and compromise, the NDA could enter the local body elections with a coordinated strategy. However, disagreements over the distribution of key positions could make the process more complicated.
All eyes are on the next round of discussions between the alliance leaders. Will Jana Sena secure its reported 30% share, and how many mayoral and municipal chairperson posts will go to each party? The final seat-sharing formula remains a key question ahead of the Andhra Pradesh local body elections.
