Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, for his outstanding contribution to the arts. The prestigious ceremony took place on April 28 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, where President Droupadi Murmu personally presented the award.

Ajith, accompanied by his family, looked proud and humble as he received the honour in the presence of top dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His arrival at the Chennai airport earlier in the day, along with his family, had already created a buzz on social media, with fans celebrating the big moment.

The announcement of Ajith Kumar’s Padma Bhushan had been made earlier in January, recognising his over three decades of stellar work in Indian cinema. Expressing his gratitude, Ajith had said it was not just a personal achievement but a reflection of collective efforts.

In his statement, he extended heartfelt thanks to the President, Prime Minister, and countless supporters from the film fraternity who played a vital role in his journey.

Ajith Kumar’s Journey to Stardom

Ajith’s film career spans over 32 years, with more than 60 films to his credit. He made his leading debut with Amaravathi in 1993 after a small appearance in En Veedu En Kanavar. Initially starring in romantic dramas, he shifted gears to action films like Amarkalam, Dheena, and Citizen, which turned him into a major box-office star. Blockbusters such as Varalaaru, Billa, and Mankatha further established him as one of Tamil cinema’s biggest icons.

In 2025, Ajith delighted fans with two major releases: Vidaamuyarchi, directed by Magizh Thirumeni, and Good Bad Ugly, directed by Adhik Ravichandran. His versatility and consistent performances have kept him among the top stars of South Indian cinema.

A Multi-Talented Icon Beyond Acting

Apart from acting, Ajith has made a significant mark in motorsports. His team, Ajith Kumar Racing, achieved notable success this year, securing third place in the 991 category and winning the ‘Spirit of the Race’ title at the 24H series in the UAE. Recently, his team grabbed the second position at the prestigious Spa-Francorchamps Circuit in Belgium, proving his excellence beyond cinema.

Ajith, a Kalaimamani awardee and a recipient of three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, continues to inspire with his passion for racing, shooting, and acting. His recognition with the Padma Bhushan celebrates not only his contribution to films but also his dedication to arts, sports, and the spirit of excellence.

Meanwhile, at the same event, other prominent figures like actor-politician Nandamuri Balakrishna, veteran filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, and Kannada actor Anant Nag were also honoured with the Padma Bhushan. Noted Malayalam writer M. T. Vasudevan Nair and singer Pankaj Udhas were posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan.

The Padma Awards, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri, are among the highest civilian honours of India, recognising contributions across fields like art, public affairs, science, and social service.
