Aamir Khan has surprised the Indian film industry by announcing that his film Sitaare Zameen Par will stream directly on YouTube Movies for Rs 100 starting August 1. He made this announcement just six weeks after the film’s theatrical release on June 20. During a press conference in Mumbai, Aamir admitted that he intentionally misled audiences about the YouTube release to protect the film’s box-office earnings. He now takes a bold step that could revolutionize how filmmakers distribute their films in India.
A New Path: Why Aamir Chose YouTube Over OTT
Aamir rejected a Rs 125 crore offer from Prime Video because he prefers the pay-per-view model over the subscription-based model. He explained that platforms with subscriptions don’t encourage audiences to value individual films. “I don’t want Rs 125 crore from a company, I want Rs 100 directly from the audience,” he said. Aamir believes that this method creates a fairer system where filmmakers earn based on how many people actually watch their films.
Aamir Khan Turns YouTube Into His Digital Theatre
In March, Aamir launched his YouTube channel, Aamir Khan Talkies, with a bigger plan in mind. He plans to release all Aamir Khan Productions films on the channel after their time in theatres. He will keep the content ad-free and price each film at Rs 100 to make it affordable for everyone. He also plans to add classics like Lagaan (2001), Taare Zameen Par (2007), and Peepli Live (2010). In addition, Aamir will include films produced by his father Tahir Hussain, such as Caravan (1971) and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), to celebrate India’s cinematic legacy.
Aamir’s Mission to Uplift Indie Filmmakers
Aamir also wants to help young and independent filmmakers who struggle to find space in traditional cinema. Through his YouTube channel, he will showcase their films and let them earn directly from their viewers. Although he will take a small fee, he promises that creators will receive most of the profits.
With this move, Aamir Khan not only makes films more accessible, especially for small-town audiences, but also opens the door to a new era in digital film distribution. His Rs 100-per-film strategy might just inspire the entire industry to rethink how it reaches its audience.
