Aadhaar Shock: UIDAI Cancels Aadhaar Cards of Over 2 Crore People Nationwide

By TeluguFunda / November 27, 2025

In a major development, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that it has cancelled the Aadhaar cards of more than 2 crore individuals across the country. This unprecedented move has triggered widespread discussion and concern among citizens.

According to UIDAI, around 2.3 crore Aadhaar cards have been identified for cancellation. Aadhaar has become essential for almost every official service in India from birth certificates to death records making the mass cancellation highly significant.

Why Were These Aadhaar Cards Cancelled?

UIDAI clarified that the majority of the Aadhaar numbers being cancelled belong to deceased individuals. Over the past four years, several irregularities and discrepancies have been detected in the Aadhaar database, which is the largest biometric database in the world.

There have also been complaints and reports of misuse, including multiple people having the same Aadhaar number, an issue highlighted during recent elections. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had also raised questions regarding Aadhaar duplication and errors.

In response, UIDAI launched a country-wide data cleanup exercise to remove invalid and duplicate entries.

What UIDAI Is Doing Now

UIDAI has outlined the following actions as part of the cleanup:

  • Cancelling Aadhaar numbers of deceased individuals.
  • Ensuring cancelled numbers are not reassigned to anyone in the future.
  • Investigating cases where one Aadhaar number was mistakenly issued to two different people.
  • Taking action against officials found responsible for errors or misconduct.
  • Collecting Aadhaar usage data from the Registrar General of India, state governments, UTs, the Public Distribution System, and the National Social Assistance Programme.
  • Launching initiatives to strengthen and verify Aadhaar records.

UIDAI has reassured the public that individuals with accurate and verified Aadhaar details have nothing to worry about. Only records with confirmed issues are being cancelled.

This massive cleanup drive represents one of the most significant actions taken by UIDAI to maintain the accuracy and integrity of India’s Aadhaar ecosystem.
