A comeback to Team India after four years is never easy, especially for a 36-year-old fast bowler. But Bhuvneshwar Kumar has made it happen. The experienced pacer has been picked for India’s upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, marking his return to the national team after last playing in November 2022.
Although Bhuvneshwar stayed away from international cricket during this period, he continued to make his presence felt in the IPL. His performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2025 and 2026 seasons have reportedly played a major role in his comeback. He claimed 45 wickets across the two seasons, including an impressive 28 wickets in the 2026 edition. His ability to swing the new ball during the powerplay remains one of his biggest strengths.
Fitness has also become a key factor in Bhuvneshwar’s return. The veteran pacer recently revealed that he has been working extensively on his fitness with the help of a physiotherapist and trainer. He also feels that his bowling speed has improved compared to previous years. Bhuvneshwar has made no secret of his desire to play another World Cup, and this comeback could give him a fresh opportunity to chase that dream.
Interestingly, Bhuvneshwar’s selection for the T20I series could also be viewed as part of India’s broader plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. While his bowling ability is not considered a major concern, the team management will reportedly assess whether his body can handle the demands of 50-over cricket. His last appearance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy came in 2023, making his workload and fitness an important area to monitor.
India’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand begins on October 22 in Christchurch. With Jasprit Bumrah rested, Bhuvneshwar joins Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav in the pace attack. The big question now is whether this is simply a short T20I comeback or the beginning of Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s road back to the 2027 World Cup. His fitness and performances in the coming matches could decide the answer.
