US President Donald Trump heaped praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France. The two leaders, who met after a long gap, discussed a wide range of issues and reaffirmed the strong ties between India and the United States.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Trump described Modi as a close friend and lauded his leadership qualities. In his trademark style, Trump said that although Modi looks like “an angel,” he is actually a “tough negotiator.” The remark drew smiles from the Indian Prime Minister, who stood beside Trump during the interaction.
Trump recalled the “Howdy Modi” event and said that Modi’s leadership has impressed millions around the world. Calling him one of the toughest leaders he knows, Trump remarked that while people often describe Modi as a kind and good man, he is also extremely firm when it comes to protecting India’s interests. He added that he has immense respect for the Indian Prime Minister and assured that India would always have a great friend in the White House during his presidency.
Trump also said that the United States would stand firmly with India in the event of any attack and promised support in times of crisis. Referring to the recent incident near the Strait of Hormuz in which three Indian sailors lost their lives, Trump expressed condolences and assured cooperation with India on security matters.
Prime Minister Modi, meanwhile, stressed the importance of ensuring free and unrestricted trade through the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that the safety of thousands of Indian sailors remains a top priority and called for measures to guarantee their security.
Modi also appreciated Trump’s efforts toward maintaining peace in West Asia and noted that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open would benefit the global economy. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that India and the United States would soon conclude a bilateral trade agreement, further strengthening economic ties between the two nations.
