Bollywood actress Radhika Apte has once again triggered a debate among Telugu movie lovers with her comments about her experiences in South Indian cinema. Her remarks have raised questions about whether she is being unnecessarily critical of South films, particularly Telugu cinema, despite having worked in only a handful of projects in the industry.

Speaking about her experience working in South Indian films, Radhika Apte revealed that she was once asked to play a character who had to marry her own uncle. She also recalled being paired opposite a much older hero, while her character was eventually killed halfway through the film. She cited these experiences as examples of patriarchy and the unequal treatment of women in the film industry.

However, her comments have raised another question among netizens: Didn’t she know about the story and the nature of her character before signing the film?

Why Accept a Role If She Had Concerns?

Generally, actors listen to the narration and understand their characters before agreeing to a project. If Radhika had reservations about the storyline, the age difference with her co-star or the fate of her character, she could have declined the offer. Speaking about uncomfortable experiences is completely fair, but questioning the industry’s practices years later has sparked a different kind of discussion.

Why Single Out Telugu Cinema?

Interestingly, Radhika Apte has also been part of Bollywood projects such as Lust Stories, which explored bold and controversial themes. There is nothing wrong with choosing unconventional roles, and every actress has the freedom to make her own career decisions. However, some Telugu movie fans are questioning why certain storytelling choices become a major talking point when they happen in South Indian films.

Like every other film industry, Telugu cinema has its share of shortcomings, including issues related to women’s representation and characterisation. Bollywood, too, has produced films featuring controversial relationships, uncomfortable storylines and unequal treatment of female characters.

Ultimately, the question doing the rounds on social media is simple: If Radhika Apte had such strong reservations about the role and its storyline, why did she agree to be part of the film in the first place? Her comments have once again opened up a debate about the way South Indian cinema is perceived compared to Bollywood.

The ruling NDA alliance appears to have made a strong start in the Andhra Pradesh local body elections, with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) emerging as the dominant force in the initial postal ballot trends. The early indications suggest a significant advantage for TDP across several municipalities, reflecting the party’s strong organisational network and cadre strength across the state.

According to the figures currently circulating, TDP is reportedly leading in nearly 90% of the municipalities where postal ballot counting has been completed. The party is showing impressive leads in key areas, including Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Chittoor, strengthening expectations of a strong electoral performance.

Meanwhile, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has also secured a considerable number of postal ballot votes. Its performance has reportedly been encouraging in several areas, although the voting pattern among government employees, particularly Sachivalayam staff, could have influenced the initial numbers.

Jana Sena Party (JSP) is also making its presence felt, with leads reported in constituencies such as Amalapuram, Madakasira and Narsapuram. The early trends indicate that the NDA alliance is in a favourable position, with TDP contributing the major share of its electoral strength.

However, postal ballot trends alone cannot determine the final outcome. The counting of votes polled by the general public is expected to provide a much clearer picture of the political situation across Andhra Pradesh.

With TDP showing a commanding lead in the initial trends and Jana Sena adding to the alliance’s strength, the NDA is off to a promising start. All eyes are now on the actual counting results to see whether these early indications translate into a decisive victory for the alliance.

Punchline:

Aadarsha Kutumbam is a decent family entertainer that blends comedy, action, and emotions. Venkatesh leads the show with his effortless performance, while the first half offers plenty of entertaining moments.

Storyline:

Chitti Babu Thotti (Venkatesh), his wife Swarna Thotti (Srinidhi Shetty), and their children struggle with financial problems and mounting debts. Their lives take an unexpected turn when they win a ₹100 crore lottery and move into a luxurious villa worth ₹20 crore. However, their newfound happiness soon attracts trouble when a Bihar-based dacoit gang targets the wealthy family. What happens when the gang enters their lives, and how does the family deal with the unexpected danger? The rest of the story unfolds around these developments.

Positives:

Venkatesh is the biggest strength of the film. Playing a middle-class family man with a comic touch and mass appeal comes naturally to him. He handles the comedy effortlessly and also impresses in the action sequences.

Srinidhi Shetty delivers a good performance and surprises with her comic timing. Trivikram’s writing gives her character some entertaining moments. The performances of child actors Raja Prajwal and Yuvina Parthavi are also impressive.

Satya provides several hilarious moments and adds to the film’s entertainment quotient. Raghu Babu, Rao Ramesh, and the supporting cast perform well within their respective roles.

The first half is neatly written, with a good balance of comedy and action. The interval sequence stands out as one of the major highlights. The twist in the second half also addresses the initial doubts surrounding the film’s storyline and its similarities to a recent blockbuster.

Thaman’s background score elevates several important sequences. The film’s attempt to blend family emotions with comedy and action also gives it a familiar Trivikram flavour.

Negatives:

Nivetha Pethuraj has very little scope to perform, which is disappointing considering her talent. Nara Rohith is just okay in his role, while a stronger performer could have added more impact. Udaybir Sandhu gets a decent character, but his performance could have been more effective.

The basic storyline is not particularly engaging, although the screenplay maintains a reasonable pace. More importantly, the emotional sequences fail to create the desired impact and feel somewhat artificial. A stronger emotional foundation could have helped audiences connect better with the characters.

The second half begins with an interesting twist but struggles to maintain the momentum established in the first half. A few portions feel uneven, and the overall impact is comparatively weaker. The songs also fail to make a lasting impression.

Technicalities:

Trivikram Srinivas delivers the film in his familiar style, combining situational comedy, action, and family elements. His trademark dialogue-writing and humour work in several portions. However, better handling of the emotional sequences could have made the film much more effective.

Navin Nooli’s editing is sharp in the first half but becomes slightly inconsistent in the second half. Thaman’s background score is a major asset, though the songs are underwhelming. The ‘Narayanamma’ song feels particularly unnecessary.

Kevin Kumar’s action choreography deserves appreciation, especially for the interval sequence. Ravi K Chandran’s cinematography is decent, and the production values are good.

Rating: 3.25/5

Final Verdict:

Aadarsha Kutumbam House No. 47 is a decent family entertainer that offers a satisfying dose of comedy and action. Venkatesh, Srinidhi Shetty, and Satya keep the proceedings entertaining, while the first half and interval sequence are major highlights. However, an underwhelming second half, weak emotional moments, and underutilised characters prevent the film from reaching its full potential. Despite these shortcomings, it makes for an enjoyable family watch.
