The Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy-2024 has become contentious for a reason. It attempts to curb Freedom of Expression in the name of attacking “anti-national” posts. Content that the state government deems anti-national is going to be treated as a “serious offence that carries severe consequences, with penalties ranging from three years of imprisonment to a life term.”
At the same time, the new social media policy aims at rewarding digital influencers who enjoy a high number of followers/subscribers and are pro-government. “Those sharing information on government schemes, initiatives and projects through their channels will be given opportunities to earn revenue through advertisements. They can earn up to Rs 8 lakh (per month),” a report by Hindustan Times says.
Critics say that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is resorting to censorship by scaring activists with jail terms. And by incentivizing pro-government influencers through taxpayer money, he could well be inviting judicial intervention.
