“We’ve crafted a whole new universe for ‘Kalki,’ offering a glimpse into what the future cities of India might look like,” shared Director Nag Ashwin in an exclusive interview. The ambitious project, titled ‘Kalki 2898 AD,’ promises to be a larger-than-life, mythology-inspired, futuristic sci-fi film featuring the colossal combination of Prabhas, Nag Ashwin, and Vyjayanthi Movies.
In this cinematic extravaganza, industry stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani play pivotal roles, making it a highly anticipated venture produced by Ashwin Dutt under the Vyjayanthi Movies banner. The film’s first glimpses, unveiled at the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con, garnered a phenomenal response globally.
Speaking at a special program held at IIT Bombay, Nag Ashwin showcased exclusive content from ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ during Tech Fest’23. In a subsequent Q&A session, he shed light on the distinctive aspects of the film.
Addressing the uniqueness of ‘Kalki’ in the science fiction genre, Nag Ashwin remarked, “There are not many science fiction films, especially those exploring time travel. ‘Kalki’ is distinctly different—a narrative set in a one-of-a-kind world. While Hollywood has showcased futuristic cities, ‘Kalki’ offers a glimpse into the future cities of India. We’ve invested nearly five years in meticulously designing every aspect and building a new world. I’m confident that audiences will find it captivating.”
The teaser revealed intriguing new weapons, prompting questions about their design and significance. Nag Ashwin shared, “We engaged in extensive design work for ‘Kalki,’ collaborating with concept artists and production designers. The technology, weapons, tropes, and costumes incorporated have roots in Indian origin, with each element designed with careful consideration for its future evolution. The visual impact on the screen is expected to be stunning.”
Regarding the cast, Nag Ashwin remained tight-lipped about the specific roles of Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Deepika Padukone but teased, “Their roles in ‘Kalki’ are unlike anything they have portrayed before. Fans are in for a treat.”
When asked about the significance of the timeline ‘2898 AD,’ Nag Ashwin hinted at a logical explanation, teasing, “There is a rationale behind it, but I’ll reveal it closer to the film’s release.”
The choice of Santosh Narayan for the film’s music was explained by Nag Ashwin, who praised the composer for infusing Indian roots with a global sound.
Addressing Prabhas’s makeover for ‘Kalki,’ Nag Ashwin playfully hinted, “The future sees Prabhas in ‘Kalki’.”
When asked about the possibility of a Nagi Universe, Nag Ashwin humorously dismissed the idea, saying, “No.”
Reflecting on working with Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, and Amitabh Bachchan, Nag Ashwin expressed admiration, stating, “All of them are wonderful people and exceptional actors. They are humble, love, and appreciate cinema—a shared quality among them.”
As for the film’s release date, Nag Ashwin assured, “We will announce it soon,” while hinting at the trailer release with a playful “Maybe after 93 days.” With such intriguing tidbits, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is undoubtedly poised to be a cinematic spectacle that transcends boundaries and expectations.
