The Surya Tilak of Ayodhya

The-Surya-Tilak-of-Ayodhya

In a groundbreaking fusion of tradition and modernity, Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir is set to witness a celestial spectacle this Ram Navami. The ingenious innovation known as the Surya Tilak, devised by the collaborative efforts of scientists and devotees, promises to illuminate the forehead of the revered Ram Lalla idol with a beam of sunlight, symbolizing the divine presence of Lord Ram.

The Surya Tilak project, a brainchild of scientists at CSIR-CBRI Roorkee, aims to channel sunlight onto the forehead of the Ram Lalla idol precisely at noon on the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, which falls on the ninth day of the Chaitra month every year. This synchrony of celestial alignment and religious festivity marks a profound union of faith and scientific endeavor.

Dr. S K Panigrahi, a scientist at CSIR-CBRI Roorkee, elucidated the underlying principles behind the Surya Tilak. “The basic objective of the project is to focus a ’tilak’ on the forehead of Shri Ram idol on every Shri Ram Navami day,” he explained. Through meticulous calculations, scientists have determined the optimal configuration of mirrors and lenses to achieve this remarkable feat.

The meticulously engineered apparatus, constructed with brass and bronze materials for durability and corrosion resistance, orchestrates a complex interplay of mirrors and lenses. Sunlight, captured by a mirror on the top floor of the temple, undergoes a transformative journey, traversing through strategically placed lenses before finally alighting upon the sanctum-sanctorum of the Ram Mandir.

The planned size of the tilak, measuring 58 mm, will grace the forehead of Ram Lalla for approximately three to three and a half minutes, with two minutes of full illumination. This celestial phenomenon, known as the ‘Surya Abhishek,’ symbolizes the divine blessings bestowed upon devotees on the occasion of Ram Navami.

The significance of the Surya Tilak extends beyond its visual spectacle, encapsulating a harmonious convergence of tradition, innovation, and spirituality. As Ayodhya prepares to witness this awe-inspiring spectacle, the Surya Tilak stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Lord Ram and the unwavering devotion of his devotees.
