Critics are mixed about Akshay Kumar's 'Sarfira'

‘Sarfira’ (Hindi), the remake of the Tamil movie ‘Soorarai Pottru’, was released in theatres today (July 12th). What are the critics saying about it? Let’s find out.

Akshay Kumar plays a former Indian Air Force pilot named Vir Mhatre in the movie. “Every possible obstacle rises in Vir’s path, leading to overwrought scenes that border on the fantastical despite supposedly being based on actual incidents,” opined Scroll in its review.

However, Hindustan Times appreciated writer-director Sudha Kongara’s story, saying that the film makes you “clap and cry at the same time and you feel for each character from the word go. Throughout its runtime, the film highlights and celebrates Vir’s journey of perseverance and strength to battle all obstacles.”

NDTV gave a 2-star review. “The chemistry between Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madan is nowhere near the self-propelling kind that Suriya and Aparna Balamurali achieved. That drags the film down quite a few notches,” the critic wrote. Film Companion found fault with the “Akshay Kumar-ization of the film”. The reviewer said that the film showcases the hero as a social saviour.
