Bangladesh saga: Hasina’s downfall, US interference, killings, India’s fears

It has been a day since Sheikh Hasina resigned as the Bangladesh Prime Minister. She fled the country she ruled for many years amid violent, allegedly orchestrated anti-government protests. India has provided her refuge. She is considered India’s best friend in the South Asian region.

Here are some narratives that we have heard around the military coup in Bangladesh:

  1. America is behind the whole saga:

Geopolitical commentators say that the Bangladesh collapse is the handiwork of the American Deep State. The US is notorious for meddling with otherwise stable countries to install its puppets in power. Sheik Hasina was democratically elected and yet her government was called illegitimate.

While Hasina’s controversial quota system reserving 30% of jobs for families of veterans who fought the 1971 liberation war was the trigger for country-wide protests, students in colleges and universities were propelled into creating unrest by foreign forces, observers allege.

  1. Killings, attacks, chaos:

Hundreds have died in clashes between students and police/military. Also, the clashes between demonstrators and members of the Awami League claimed the lives of at least 96 people in police firings on Monday alone, a report by News18 said.

  1. Millions of Hindus to enter India?:

Attacks have taken place on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh in recent days. Newspapers in Bangladesh today (August 6th) said that Hindu businesses and houses have been attacked in 27 districts. Hindu women have been kidnapped. Temples have been attacked. As per Bengal BJP leader Suvendhu Adhikari, one crore Hindus will enter India if this situation doesn’t come under control within three days.

  1. India must wake up!:

The Indian security apparatus is on alert. Many say that the US Deep State will attempt to overthrow Narendra Modi in the near future. This fear might seem highly improbable, but those who said similar things about Hasina’s fate a few months ago were ridiculed.
