Bollywood director Ram Gopal Varma has been sentenced to three months of imprisonment by a Mumbai court in a cheque bounce case. The Andheri Magistrate Court issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) for his arrest after he failed to attend the hearing on January 22, 2024.
Case Background
The case dates back to 2018 when Mahesh Chandra Mishra, representing a company named Shree, filed a complaint against Ram Gopal Varma’s firm over a cheque that bounced. Varma was found guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, which deals with dishonored cheques.
The court has ordered Varma to pay Rs 3.72 lakh in compensation to the complainant within three months. If he fails to comply, he will face an additional three months of simple imprisonment.
Long Legal Proceedings
This case had been pending in court for the past seven years. Despite the extended timeline, Varma never appeared in court during the hearings. His absence during the January 22 verdict angered the court, leading to the issuance of the NBW.
In June 2022, Varma was granted bail in this case after providing a personal recognizance bond and depositing cash security of Rs 5,000. However, his failure to appear for subsequent proceedings escalated the matter.
Financial Troubles and Recent Developments
Ram Gopal Varma, known for directing successful films like Satya, Rangeela, Company, and Sarkar, has faced severe financial difficulties in recent years. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he was forced to sell his office to manage his finances.
On January 22, 2024, the court announced its final verdict. Varma was sentenced to three months of simple imprisonment and instructed to pay compensation to the complainant. He now has the option to appeal the ruling in a higher court, but until then, Mumbai Police are required to execute the non-bailable warrant.
What’s Next for RGV?
The conviction has added legal trouble to Varma’s already challenging professional life. He recently announced his new project, Syndicate, which has been generating buzz for its unique storyline. However, his focus may now shift to resolving this legal dispute. Varma’s response to this verdict remains to be seen.
