Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) has raised serious doubts about the authenticity of the reported box office collections of Ram Charan’s latest release, Game Changer. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Varma criticized the exaggerated claims, calling them a “humiliating insult” to the achievements of South Indian cinema.
RGV’s Criticism of Inflated Numbers
RGV pointed out the significant discrepancy between the producers’ claims and trade reports. While the film’s official team declared that Game Changer earned a staggering ₹186 crore globally on its opening day, trade trackers like Sacnilk reported collections of only ₹80 crore worldwide. Some sources suggested that the film’s earnings were under ₹100 crore.
In his post, Varma sarcastically praised directors like SS Rajamouli (Baahubali, RRR) and Sukumar (Pushpa) for elevating South Indian cinema with their real box office success. He then accused Game Changer of tarnishing that credibility, stating, “The people behind Game Changer succeeded in proving the South is fantastic at being a fraud.”
Concerns Over South Indian Cinema’s Credibility
RGV expressed concern that these inflated numbers undermine the extraordinary success of films like Baahubali 2, RRR, KGF 2, and Kantara. He argued that the unrealistic claims damage the trust in South Indian cinema’s achievements. He also raised doubts about the film’s reported ₹450 crore budget, comparing it unfavorably to the visual spectacle of RRR. “If Game Changer cost ₹450 crore, then RRR should have cost ₹4,500 crore,” he added.
Trade Analysts Echo RGV’s Sentiments
Film trade experts also criticized the alleged exaggerations. One analyst noted “Inflating the collections by ₹100 crore in a single day is outrageous. This hurts the credibility of box office numbers.”
While small exaggerations in collections are common, analysts believe Game Changer took it too far, damaging the trust in official reports.
