‘Kanguva’ is a declared disaster. By the end of Sunday, it will become evident how big a disaster the movie is.
Film critics and most audience members are blaming it on director Siva’s taste and aesthetics. Of course, it’s the director who must take the maximum blame for such epic misfires. It is Siva who must have forced Devi Sri Prasad to compose an ultra-loud score. DSP is not dumb to do that, left to himself.
But an under-analyzed factor is Suriya himself. The hero of an epic movie has a lot riding on him. He must carry whole scenes on his shoulders. For this, he must bring his physicality to the character. His expression range must be good, if not great.

Suriya’s physique and get-up are devoid of aura in ‘Kanguva’. As a result, he comes across as just another warrior, not a brave, valorous warrior. If anything, his poor screen presence drags down a lot of scenes in ‘Kanguva’.
Some actors are not cut out for certain roles. Had the role of an ancient warrior suited Suriya, he would be looking at a thriving pan-India career today. Prabhas’ career took off to a flying national start because he looked awesome as Amarendra and Mahendra Baahubali.
