September Telugu Cinema Report: Rift of Biggies and Small Movies, See Varied Results

September was unique in terms of star vehicles and content-rich films vying for space. ‘Devara’ and ‘The Greatest Of All Time’, between them, were made on a budget of Rs 800 Cr or thereabouts. ‘Devara’ revved up the box office despite not possessing cinematic brilliance. Jr NTR’s stamina was on display. On the other hand, Vijay’s film (dubbed in Telugu) struggled to register footfalls. The film incurred losses at the Telugu box office.

Here is the detailed BO report of ‘Devara’: ‘Devara’ box office report: Jr NTR’s roar, Koratala Siva’s cool comeback!

Moving away from the biggies, let’s analyze two content-rich films that mattered. ’35 – Chinna Katha Kaadu’ and ‘Sathyam Sundaram’ (dubbed). The former, which was a commentary on the education system and children’s academic phobias, was a soothing experience to watch. It didn’t get the kind of BO success it deserved but it didn’t make losses either. ‘Sathyam Sundaram’, starring Karthi and Arvind Swami, had a sputtering start at the Telugu BO because of the ‘Devara’ juggernaut. As the first weekend faded away, the film started finding takers in the Telugu market.

It is heartwarming that both ’35 – Chinna Katha Kaadu’ and ‘Sathyam Sundaram’ were supported by experienced hands (by Suresh Productions and Asian Suresh Entertainment, respectively).

‘Mathu Vadalara 2’, the buddy cop comedy, was a roaring hit. The success of this sequel will only mean that the craze for comedic sequels have gotten a fresh boost. In 10 days, it earned a worldwide gross of nearly Rs 30 Cr.
